Things That Help You Select the Right Used Car

Used cars are still new cars; they’re new to you. If you are looking into buying a used car, there are a few steps you can take to “insure” your purchase. Obviously, you’re going to insure your new-to-you car, truck, or SUV, but you want to do more than just take the vehicle for a test drive before you buy it. Ideal Automotive suggests you do the following things to ensure you’re selecting a safe and reliable used car.

Get an Inspection

Kicking the tires isn’t a good enough inspection for any new-to-you car that you might be looking at. It’s best to get a professional inspection so you know everything works and there isn’t any hidden damage. The previous owner can easily hide a prior accident if the body has been repaired or undercarriage, flood, or fire damage. Have the vehicle thoroughly inspected before you buy it.

Extend the Test Drive

We mentioned in the introduction that there were more things you should do besides taking a test drive but you should still test drive it. Extend the test drive, however, to include slow driving, freeway driving, driving up and down hills, and on a bumpy road. You won’t know if the vehicle has trouble at high speeds or suspension issues if you don’t take for more than a spin around the block.

Get the Vehicle’s History Report

Even if you’re buying the used car from someone you know, he or she may be reticent to tell you things that might change your mind. Get the history report for the vehicle in question so you can see if there is anything of concern such as product recall for that year, make, and model or lemon law buybacks. The history report will also reveal any reported accidents in which the automobile has been involved.

Don’t Just Rely on the History Report

Finally, research the used car, truck, or SUV you want to buy to see what others are saying about it. Check legitimate discussion forums to find a common complaint. See what the automotive experts have to say about the vehicle. You can even see how well the car, truck, or SUV faired safety-wise by inputting it into the NHTSA’s website so you can review their safety tests. This is great information to have.
