Reviving your old car battery: Tips and tricks

Did you know that you can save a significant sum of money by repairing your dead car battery instead of replacing it? A lot of people are not aware of this fact. At times, you may find that your car battery is no longer working, but before writing it off, there are a few ways to revive it. We will highlight some tips and tricks to help you repair your car battery and get it working as good as new.

Clean The Battery

Before you start trying to revive your dead car battery, it’s essential to clean it first. This process is necessary because dirt, corrosion, and other debris on your battery’s exterior can cause it to lose power. Use a wire brush to scrub the terminals and the battery cables until they are sparkling clean. A common household item to create a cleaning solution is baking soda. Mix it into warm water until it becomes a paste. Use that paste to brush away the grime from the battery’s terminals.

Revive the Dead Battery with Epsom Salt

Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate, a mineral that is useful for battery maintenance. By adding it to your battery, it facilitates the chemical process in restoring the battery’s health. First, purchase some Epsom salt and dissolve at least 10 teaspoons into warm water. Use a funnel to pour the solution into the battery cells, and then leave it for several hours, preferably overnight, to recharge the dead battery.

Recharge the battery

Recharging the battery is an obvious solution to solve the issue of a dead battery. This method is suitable for batteries that are not entirely dead. Attaching jumper cables from another vehicle is an efficient way to recharge the car battery. Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery, then the other end to the positive terminal on the other car battery and repeat the same for the negative cable. Leave this running for about 15-20 minutes. Then, try to restart the car.

In conclusion, while old car batteries may seem useless, there’s always hope to revive them with the above tips and tricks. Remember that repair is also an alternative to scheduled maintenance to keep your car battery operating efficiently and save you money. However, if none of our tips work, it’s time to let go of the old battery, dispose of it properly, and replace it with a new one. Also, with every repair done to your vehicle, always consider consulting or taking it to a professional auto repair shop for proper guidance.
