Regular Unleaded or Premium Fuel – Which is Best?

Your standing there at the pump ready to fill up your gas tank, but which option should you choose? Is the cheaper unleaded option okay for your vehicle or should you go for premium? Are they really that different? Does it even matter? Ideal Automotive wants you to understand the difference in fuel types and how to choose the one that is right for your vehicle.

What’s the difference?

There are a few differences between regular unleaded and premium fuel, but the main difference is their individual makeup. Unleaded fuel is actually a byproduct of the commonly found crude oil. It has a lower burning point as crude oil is highly flammable. Premium fuel contains additives that help it keep your engine clean as well as raising the ignition point.

Because of their individual makeups, you will notice a difference when it comes to cost and performance. In addition to keeping your engine clean, premium fuel also lowers the emissions from your vehicle. The most obvious difference between the two is cost. On average, premium fuel will cost you around 30 cents a gallon. That price adds up by the time you have filled up your tank.

Does that mean premium fuel is better than regular unleaded?

The short answer is no. You can’t just put premium fuel in your car and expect it to run better. The higher octane rating on premium fuel means that it is more resistant to ignition than unleaded. Unless you have a high-performance engine, unleaded will typically be fine for your vehicle. That being said, you should never use regular unleaded in a vehicle that requires premium.

How do I know which one is right for my vehicle?

The best way to choose the right fuel for your car is to consult your owners manual and your trusted mechanic. They will walk you through the choices and help you choose the one that is the most compatible with your vehicle, engine, and driving habits. Anytime you are thinking about making a change to your vehicle, Ideal Automotive wants you to get the advice of a technician who knows your vehicle.
